Winter storm School closures ahead of NE Florida and SE Georgia winter storm

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As a winter storm is expected to impact Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia beginning Tuesday night, some school districts are beginning to announce closures.

This list will be updated when Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia district schools, private schools, colleges, and universities officially announce they will cancel classes.

If a district or school is not listed below, that district or school has not announced a closure.

St. Johns County District Schools announced Tuesday afternoon that it “will observe normal operations” on Wednesday.

Action News Jax is monitoring the status of schools and will update information as it comes into our newsroom.

Northeast Florida:

Baker County

Baker County Schools posted the following message from Superintendent Wyatt Milton on the district’s website: “After speaking with local law enforcement and other agencies, I have made the decision to cancel school on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, out of an abundance of caution. Based on the current weather forecast, we could experience conditions that make driving on the roads unsafe. We will resume school on Thursday, January 23, 2025.”

Bradford County

Bradford County Schools said Tuesday morning that, “Schools and District Offices will be closed Wednesday, January 22nd and reopen Thursday, January 23rd. Stay warm and safe Tornadoes!”

Clay County

Clay County District Schools said all schools “and offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 22nd. We anticipate resuming normal operations on Thursday, January 23rd.”

Columbia County

Columbia County Schools said Tuesday “all schools and offices will close by 4:30 PM today (Tuesday) and remain closed on Wednesday for the safety of our students and staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

“We anticipate reopening schools on Thursday, January 23, but will provide a final confirmation in a follow-up update on Wednesday.”

Duval County

Duval County Public Schools said schools and district offices “will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 22. In addition, all athletics and after-school activities scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 22 will be canceled. All regularly scheduled athletic and extracurricular activities taking place today, Jan. 21, will continue as planned.”

Nassau County

Nassau County School District said Tuesday, “All Nassau schools and district offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Additionally, all after-school activities scheduled for Tuesday, January 21, 2025, are canceled.”

Putnam County

Putnam County School District said Tuesday afternoon, that “Due to the expected hazardous travel conditions in the morning, all PCSD schools and departments will be closed on Wednesday. Individual schools will notify families if Tuesday evening activities are canceled. Although cold weather is expected for the remainder of the week, schools will resume as scheduled on Thursday. Please ensure students are dressed warmly for bus rides and outdoor activities.”

Union County

Union County School District shared the following information on its website on Tuesday: “Due to the winter weather advisories and a high chance of icy road conditions making travel unsafe beginning this evening at 7 pm, the Union County School District will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The district will re-open on Thursday, January 23, 2025, and resume all normal activities. All after-school activities on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, will conclude no later than 5 pm. Please be safe and try to stay off the roadways this evening. There is a high chance of ice on the roads and bridges.”

Southeast Georgia:

Brantley County

The Brantley County School System shared the following update Monday evening: “School will be OPEN on Tuesday, January 21st, 2025 and will dismiss early at 2 p.m. Due to an increased probability of ice on roads Tuesday evening and Wednesday, school will be CLOSED on Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025.”

Camden County

Camden County Schools said Monday: “Schools will be open on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Due to the forecasted winter weather conditions (potential wintry mix, icy roads, below-freezing temperatures, and low wind chill temperatures), schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. All schools and offices will be closed, as the safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. All afterschool activities for Tuesday and Wednesday will be canceled. We will provide an update on Wednesday after we assess the readiness of roads and our buildings for reopening on Thursday, January 23, 2025.”

Charlton County

Charlton County Schools said Monday that schools will be open Tuesday, January 21st. “However, due to the forecast of sleet/freezing rain and potential snow Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, all after school activities on Tuesday Jan. 21st are cancelled,” the district said. “Additionally, schools are CLOSED for all students and staff on Wednesday Jan. 22nd. Schools are scheduled to be open and on regular schedule Thursday Jan. 23rd.”

Glynn County

Glynn County Schools said Monday that schools “will remain open on Tuesday, January 21. However, all extracurricular activities and after-school programs will conclude by 4 p.m. that day. Due to potential hazards such as black ice on roadways, impacts to power lines and trees, and freeze advisories forecasted for Tuesday night, all schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, as a precautionary measure.”

Pierce County

Pierce County Schools said Monday that it will “release early tomorrow, January 21st and be closed Wednesday, January 22nd. There will be no after school activities on these days. The release time for Tuesday, January 21st is as follows: BES, MES, PES: 1 p.m.; PCMS: 2:15 p.m.; PCHS: 2:20 p.m.”

Ware County

Ware County Schools said Monday afternoon: “Ware County Schools will release students and staff 90 minutes early on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Additionally, all schools will remain closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. All afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday, January 21st and Wednesday, January 22nd. This decision prioritizes the safety and well-being of our school community. DAFFODIL Pre-K will release at 12:45PM, and elementary schools will follow at 1:00PM. The high school will release at 1:38PM, and both middle schools will release at 2:00PM.”

Private schools:

The Bolles School: Staff sent out the following message on Tuesday afternoon:The Bolles School has made the decision to close school for all Bolles campuses tomorrow (Wednesday).”

Christ’s Church Academy and Preschool: Will be closed Wednesday, January 22nd. All athletics and extracurricular activities are canceled. Thursday (January 23rd) the school plans to resume all campus activities as scheduled.

Episcopal School of Jacksonville: All three campuses will be closed on Wednesday, January 22.

Jacksonville Country Day School: Will be closed on Wednesday, January 22. All after-school enrichment activities and extended care are canceled as well.

Providence School of Jacksonville: “Due to the freezing temperatures and potential for hazardous road conditions, PROVIDENCE SCHOOL and PRESCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW, Wednesday, January 22nd. Students in grades K-12 will have an asynchronous learning day and will be given assignments to complete at home. LS Students will be given assignments to take home today and US Students will be asked to take their laptops and valuables home.”

St. Johns Country Day School: Will be closed Wednesday, January 22, due to winter weather advisories. At this time, the school is planned to reopen on Thursday, January 23. Parents will be notified of any changes to this plan.

Colleges and Universities:

Edward Waters University: The University will transition to virtual operations on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Faculty and staff are expected to forward their office phones to ensure business services are not interrupted. All classes will transition to an online format.

Florida Gateway College: All campuses, classes and offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, due to the upcoming weather event.

Florida State College at Jacksonville: “All classes and activities at all FSCJ campuses and centers will be canceled Wednesday, January 22. This includes online classes. All College events and activities on Wednesday have been canceled. Normal operations are expected to resume on Thursday. Should a change in the weather impact operations on Thursday, alerts will be provided through email communication, alerts via our text alert system, the FSCJ Safe app and social media.”

University of North Florida: “Due to the anticipated mixed freezing precipitation weather impacts of the winter storm, the University of North Florida is canceling all classes, including online classes, events and activities and closing offices on Wednesday, January 22. The University plans to reopen for normal operations on Thursday, January 23.”
